Vandemoortele’s commitment to traceable, no deforestation, no exploitation palm oilGhent, February 12th 2014As a leading European food group, Vandemoortele is fully aware of its important role in the procurement of palm oil. In 2009, it became a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and committed to source 100% sustainable palm oil by 2015. Today Vandemoortele is enhancing this commitment by announcing its partnership with global non-profit organization TFT and pledging its commitment to only use traceable, No Deforestation and No Exploitation palm oil in its supply chain.
BackgroundWe Vandemoortele are one of Europe’s leading food manufacturers. Our margarines and fats and frozen bakery products make their way to leading retailers and restaurants and are consumed by millions of people across Europe. As a privately owned business, we consider our values - including trust and integrity - to be central to the way we operate. Hence we firmly believe responsible business practice must be achieved through a balance between business development and the careful and respectful management of natural resources.
Our palm oil story Since becoming a member of the RSPO in 2009, we have used only RSPO certified palm oil for our own retail brands. Various production sites have since been certified and have started using RSPO Mass Balance and Segregated certified sustainable palm oil. We are proud of our achievements to date and have also learnt a great deal about the global palm oil landscape. In 2013, recognizing the importance of traceability in helping to bring transformation in the palm oil industry, we became a founding member of the French Alliance for Sustainable Palm Oil, and are an active participant in many other initiatives to promote the uptake of sustainable palm oil . Pushing further in our journey, we have now become a member of TFT and will work with TFT to ensure all our palm oil is 100% traceable in order to guarantee that it is free of deforestation and exploitation.
Our Palm Oil PolicyWe are now in the process of enhancing the Vandemoortele Palm Oil Policy, for which we will work with our suppliers to achieve our goal. The Policy underpins our procurement process for palm oil, and will include:
1. Traceability 2. No clearing High Carbon Stock forests2. No clearing High Conservation Value areas3. No planting on peatlands, irrespective of depth4. No burning5. Full respect for human rights, including the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent of indigenous and local communities
ImplementationIn making sure these criteria are respected in our supply chain, we will work with TFT and our suppliers in two phases:- A first phase of transparency: better understanding our current supply chain, including commitment and practices to meet our policy- A second phase of transformation: work with suppliers to implement action plans, supporting them to make any improvements required.
Reporting We will publicly report on our progress every year on our corporate website.
