Vandemoortele buys liquid deep frying fats brand Remia for retail
12 December 2011

Remia is buying the sauce brand Gouda’s Glorie while Vandemoortele is taking over the Remia brand of liquid deep frying fats for retail. Through these takeovers, both companies have become the biggest brand suppliers in the Netherlands in the fields of sauces and deep frying fats respectively.

Sauces

In August 2011, Remia purchased the sauce activity of the Lopik firm Van Dijk Food Products with a limited licence to carry the sauce brand Gouda’s Glorie in the retail market. However, the Gouda’s Glorie brand was still owned by the Vandemoortele Group, which had obtained the Gouda’s Glorie brand last year – for sauces as well as margarines and fats – when it acquired the margarine activities of Van Dijk Food Products in Zeewolde. The Gouda’s Glorie brand for margarines and fats remains in the hands of Vandemoortele. Remia has announced that it will be siphoning off the production of sauces under the Gouda’s Glorie brand from Lopik to Den Dolder within a year. Last year, Remia already took over De Marne in Groningen, the market leader in the Dutch mustard sector.

Deep frying fat

Vandemoortele is buying the Remia liquid frying fats brand for retail. This deep frying fat in consumer packaging (2 and 3 litre tins) was until now owned by Remia. Through this acquisition Vandemoortele will be strengthening its position on the Dutch market. In the Benelux, Vandemoortele has a range of strong consumer brands such as Vandemoortele®, Vitelma®, Diamant® and Gouda’s Glorie® (margarines and fats).

The transaction does not imply that Remia intends to fully dispose of its liquid deep frying fat – a product that it was the first to introduce in 1988. In the catering sector, Remia will carry on marketing deep frying fats with undiminished activity.

About Remia
Remia is one of the best known sauce brands in the Netherlands. The company of the same name produces sauces, margarine and fats for consumers, the catering industry and industrial customers. Remia has over 400 employees and exports from Den Dolder to more than 90 countries.
